Modern Farmhouse Design: How to Capture the Feel

Countryside living meets contemporary design.

Ever since Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines erupted onto the design scene in 2013, the popularity of modern farmhouse decor (AKA the HGTV duo’s signature aesthetic) has soared. But what exactly is the newfangled style, and how did it come about?

While classic farmhouse decor—which dates back to the 1700s—showcases many of the same design features you would find at a typical farm homestead (think: an abundance of natural wood, vintage furnishings, traditional fabrics, apron sinks, etc.), modern farmhouse decor refers to an elevated version of the rustic style—a blend of country chic sensibility and crisp, contemporary design.

How is it different than traditional farmhouse style?

"People loved the farmhouse look, but quite frankly they have seen it done so much, they started looking for something different," says Texas designer Kim Armstrong. That said, there are still many elements of traditional farmhouse decor that "they are not yet ready to let go of yet," she says, spurring the emergence of modern farmhouse design.

So what's the real difference between the old and new? "Many times with classic farmhouse style, you will see more rustic elements—paneled wood walls such as bead board, butcher block counters, wide plank flooring, and furniture slipcovers for livability and comfort," says designer Jennifer Schmidt, owner of JWS Interiors. On the other hand, modern farmhouse style often showcases higher-end materials, cleaner lines, and an overall sleeker look, she notes.

In this dining room, designer Lindye Galloway "used vintage-looking wood alongside contemporary sharp lines" to create a modern farmhouse aesthetic.

Armstrong agrees, asserting that modern farmhouse "is a lot less country." She adds that the style is increasing taking cues from midcentury modern design, incorporating of rattan and woven accessories and furniture, especially in natural colors paired with black. In addition, "streamlined sofas and upholstery are emerging, alongside cubist-shaped tables and geometric light fixtures," she reveals.

Want to adopt the modish decor style? Here’s everything you should look for if you're planning to assemble a modern farmhouse interior:

Pick a neutral palette

Modern farmhouse interiors are bright, light, and airy, featuring earthy, nature-inspired tones and textures. Layer fresh whites, natural browns, and muted grays, with pops of bold hues (think dramatic blues and emerald greens). "Black is also used as a very strong accent color," says Armstrong.

This Galloway-designed bath features all of the hallmark characteristics of a modern farmhouse-style interior, including a neutral palette, clean lines, and rustic touches.

Mix organic materials

Combine solid wood, metal finishes, polished stones, exposed brick, and woven fabrics to achieve a cozy and effortless modern farmhouse look. Opt for white oak cabinetry and brass fixtures in the kitchen, for instance, or a sisal rug and cotton-upholstered seating in the living room.

Create a minimalistic feel

When it comes to modern farmhouse interiors, less is more. Don’t overwhelm the space with too many decorative pieces—simplicity is key! Be sure to eliminate clutter and make sure every item has a designated place and purpose.

Emphasize craftsmanship

Fold in high-quality handmade and artisanal pieces to infuse more character and personality into the space.

Hunt for real vintage finds

Scour flea markets and thrift shops for high-quality, authentic pieces to incorporate into your decor—from handmade quilts and antique furnishings to everything in between.

Focus on comfort

Choose colors and materials that exude warmth and promote relaxation. Modern farmhouse interiors should feel unpretentious and homey, yet elegant and refined.
